Iranian Azerbaijanis appeal to President Ilham Aliyev

The Güney Azərbaycan Koordinasiya Platforması* has sent a letter to Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev concerning the deteriorating situation in South Azerbaijan (an Azerbaijani-populated region of northwestern Iran).

In the letter, the group states that recent bombardments targeting civilian infrastructure and residential areas have placed the local population in danger and significantly worsened the humanitarian situation.

The authors of the appeal also express concern over reports that certain armed Kurdish groups may be advancing toward Urmia and nearby districts. According to the platform, such developments could heighten the risk of interethnic tensions in the region.

The organization calls on President Aliyev to use Azerbaijan’s international influence and diplomatic channels—including its contacts with Israel—to help bring the situation under diplomatic control, ensure the protection of the Azerbaijani population in the region, and prevent a further escalation of the conflict.

The statement stresses that the residents of the region do not want to see a repetition of the “Karabakh tragedy” and hope for support from Azerbaijan.
