Forbes: Armenian diaspora stance against Trump’s policy strengthens Iran and Russia’s positions

"Azerbaijan – a secular, Shia-majority state with deep historical, cultural, and geographic ties to Iran – emerges as an ideally positioned partner to help Washington steer Iran’s internal meltdown. It was this strategic logic that guided the Trump administration’s facilitation of the Azerbaijan-Armenia peace agreement last August, reflecting the understanding that stabilizing the South Caucasus would yield downstream strategic dividends beyond the immediate conflict zone. Building on this approach, Washington should strengthen its presence along Iran’s northwest frontier to better navigate turbulence likely to unfold over many years – if not decades – to come," Forbes writes.

"Translating this geopolitical rationale into policy begins with repealing Section 907 of the 1992 Freedom Support Act – a Cold War-era holdover from the first Karabakh conflict that continues to restrict U.S. assistance to Azerbaijan. Doing so would represent a readily achievable step toward deepening U.S.–Azerbaijani cooperation, particularly in managing the unfolding dynamics of Iran’s internal crisis. By contrast, the Armenian National Committee of America’s (ANCA) opposition to the Azerbaijan–Armenia peace deal, the Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity (TRIPP), and the efforts to repeal Section 907 directly undercuts these U.S. priorities. In practice, such obstruction inadvertently strengthens hardline factions in Iran while facilitating Russia’s efforts to reassert its influence in the South Caucasus," the magazine adds.
