On January 4, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev received a delegation of the U.S. Congress led by Republican Senator Markwayne Mullin, a member of the U.S. Senate Armed Services Committee, according to the Azerbaijani presidential website. During the meeting, Aliyev said that Section 907 of the Freedom Support Act is unjust and does not reflect the current development of bilateral relations. He welcomed U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to suspend its enforcement and expressed hope that members of Congress would continue their efforts to completely abolish it.
On the same day, Senator Mullin met with Azerbaijan’s Minister of Defense Zakir Hasanov, the Ministry of Defense reported. The sides discussed the current state of cooperation and prospects for expanding Azerbaijan–U.S. collaboration in the military, military-technical, and military educational areas.
