Mehr: Trump Route is a "land-based Panama Canal" in the South Caucasus

The Trump Route in the South Caucasus can be described as America’s “land-based Panama Canal,” since the two projects are similar in many respects, according to the Iranian news agency Mehr (affiliated with Iran’s Supreme Leader).

Mehr notes that the Panama Canal long served as a symbol of American power. Similarly, implementing and controlling the Trump Route—amid competition with China—could increase Washington’s regional and global influence.

“There is a high likelihood that a U.S. private military company with 1,000–1,500 personnel will be deployed near the Trump Route to provide security and conduct monitoring. The deployment of regular U.S. armed forces units cannot be ruled out either, since the route runs close to Iranian territory and is located relatively near Russia’s borders,” the news agency adds.
