Tasnim: Azerbaijan attempts to limit damage from its alliance with Israel

The cancellation of the Conference of European Rabbis—officially attributed to security concerns—was, in fact, a forced move by Baku to distance itself, at least temporarily, from the consequences of its alliance with Israel, according to Iran’s Tasnim news agency, which is affiliated with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
Tasnim notes that, amid “international condemnation of Tel Aviv’s actions in Gaza,” any show of support for the Jewish state is viewed as “complicity in its war crimes.”
In the agency’s view, by aligning with Israel, Azerbaijan risks losing part of its spiritual and cultural standing in the Islamic world. The rabbis’ conference was canceled as an attempt—“albeit a compelled one”—to limit the damage from this course.
The news outlet expresses hope that the Azerbaijani government will end its cooperation with the “occupying regime” and that the country will “rejoin the Islamic world and the supporters of freedom.”
