Hezbollah-linked media outlet: Iran persuaded Azerbaijan’s president to cancel European Rabbis Conference in Baku

Recent reports have highlighted what has been described as a success for Iranian diplomacy: it “convinced or pressured” President Ilham Aliyev to cancel the European Rabbis Conference, which had been scheduled to take place in Baku. The claim was made on the website of the Lebanese TV channel Al Mayadeen, widely regarded as the mouthpiece of Hezbollah—Iran’s most prominent regional proxy.

According to the channel, Tehran stated that holding the event would have been “a deliberate and dangerous provocation,” threatening the future of relations between the two neighboring states. Those relations are already strained by Baku’s close alliance with Israel, the article notes.

As Al Mayadeen emphasizes, sources report active Mossad activity “in the mountainous regions of southern Azerbaijan, near the Iranian border—particularly in the Zangilan area, close to the Zangezur Corridor, which is intended to link Azerbaijan with its Nakhchivan exclave through Armenian territory.”
