Israeli F-35s in Azerbaijan: Iran Is the Only Target

“It is wrong to assume that Azerbaijan drew closer to the West and Israel merely because Iran did not supply it with weapons,” said Iranian professor and Caucasus analyst Hossein Ahmadi in an interview with the Iran24 channel. According to him, British Petroleum controls the subsurface resources of the Caucasus and shapes the region’s strategic policy. Ahmadi added that Azerbaijan and Armenia are not independent actors; they serve as an arena for a larger geopolitical contest.

The analyst stressed that the deep ties between Israel and Azerbaijan are highly strategic and directed against Iran. He also claimed that 60% of Israel’s oil and gasoline comes from Azerbaijan, and that if the Shah Deniz gas field suffered even a partial outage, “Israel’s military machine would come to a halt.”

According to Ahmadi, at least five Green Pine ballistic-missile interception systems have been deployed in Azerbaijan for more than 15 years, and the F-35 fighters based there have no target other than Iran. He emphasized that the shortest route to Iran’s capital runs through Baku.
