Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian’s decision to attend the 17th Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) Summit in Khankendi at the invitation of Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev has sparked criticism amid ongoing suspicions of Baku’s involvement in Israeli attacks, according to the Iranian news outlet Quds.
The article states that Azerbaijan has, in recent years, “turned into an operational and intelligence base” for Israel near Iran’s border. Documents point to collaboration in intelligence gathering, arms deliveries, the construction of listening stations, and the use of Azerbaijani territory for operations against Iran, Quds adds.
“The Iranian president’s visit can only be considered meaningful if it includes a firm warning to the Aliyev's government. Otherwise, public opinion may interpret it as a sign of weakness in the face of clear security threats from Iran’s northwestern neighbor,” the news outlet writes.
