“There is a long list of unfriendly actions by Azerbaijan toward Iran over the past three decades,” said Hamid Hakim, an Iranian expert on Eurasian affairs, in an interview with the Quds news outlet. He pointed to Baku’s cooperation with the anti-government group Mojahedin-e-Khalq (MEK), "the use of Azerbaijani airspace" by Israeli fighter jets, and the Jewish state's support for Azerbaijan.
According to Hakim, Iranian president’s visit to Azerbaijan carries both overt and covert messages directed at Baku. “Iran is making it clear that any violation of the principles of good neighborliness will have serious consequences. Any threat originating from U.S. or Israeli bases on the territory of hostile countries will be met with retaliatory actions. These messages have already been directly conveyed to the president of Azerbaijan,” he said.
