Iran Diplomacy: Pezeshkian’s visit to Karabakh seen as risky amid Israeli presence

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian’s visit to Khankendi has raised questions, particularly in light of recent “Israeli aggression,” according to the Iranian think tank Iran Diplomacy.

The article notes that Azerbaijan “has conducted no investigations” into allegations that Israel used its territory to launch drone attacks targeting Iran, and that Azerbaijani state media have “insulted the Iranian Supreme Leader.”

Iran Diplomacy claims that Israel maintains an active presence in Karabakh under the guise of economic activity, “with the goal of conducting espionage against Iran.” Following the “departure of Armenians,” the region has become a convenient zone for the construction of Israeli military and intelligence bases, as well as airfields in Fuzuli, Zangilan, and Lachin—posing a threat to Iranian national security.

“Mr. President, are you not concerned about the security situation in this city (Khankendi)? Israel holds significant influence in this region in terms of intelligence and military operations. Don’t you think the Zionists may exploit your presence in the region (Khankendi) to carry out hostile acts against you and your delegation? writes Iran Diplomacy, posing the question to President Pezeshkian.

The think tank further warns: “We have not forgotten the helicopter crash involving Mr. Raisi after his return from the Iran-Azerbaijan border.”

The article also questions the purpose of Pezeshkian’s visit, arguing that his previous trip resulted only in the reopening of air links and the resumption of operations at the Baku branch of Bank Melli Iran (National Bank of Iran). Meanwhile, “Aliyev continues to refuse to open the land border (with the Islamic Republic) despite repeated requests,” and continues to deepen ties with Israel with the aim of “weakening Iran.”
