Iranian state newspaper highlights Azerbaijan’s ambiguous role and outlines scenarios in Iran–Israel confrontation

While Azerbaijan affirms its commitment to diplomacy and “brotherly relations” with Iran, its expanding cooperation with Israeli entities points to “a dual-track policy,” according to the Iranian state newspaper Farhikhtegan.
This contradiction, the article notes, has deepened Iranian suspicions and positioned Azerbaijan as a potential arena of conflict. Russian analyst Vladimir Popov argues that Azerbaijan’s transformation into “Israel’s southern frontier” could destabilize Baku’s own security, given Iran’s numerous indirect means of leverage.
Farhikhtegan outlines three possible scenarios for Azerbaijan’s future role in the Iran–Israel standoff:
▪️ Further deepening military dependence on Israel, leading to increased tensions with Iran;
▪️ A pivot toward neutrality, prioritizing diplomacy with Tehran and reducing reliance on Israel;
▪️ An attempt to act as a mediator between Iran and Israel.
