Azerbaijani expert: Iran is running a smear campaign without providing evidence

Iran has no evidence or concrete facts to support its accusations against Baku, said Farhad Abbasov, a researcher at Azerbaijan’s National Center for Democracy and Security Studies, in an interview with the Qatari newspaper Al Jazeera.

According to Abbasov, Tehran is conducting a smear campaign against Azerbaijan in an effort to deflect attention from its own security failures, which have revealed the presence of networks operating for Israeli intelligence inside Iran.

He noted that the anti-Azerbaijani content in Iranian media is part of a coordinated campaign backed by state institutions.

Abbasov also outlined the key motives behind this campaign:

▪️ Azerbaijan’s close relations with Israel;
▪️ Baku’s pursuit of an independent policy free from Iranian influence;
▪️ The national identity of millions of ethnic Azerbaijanis living in Iran’s northwestern provinces—whom Tehran views as a threat.
