Iran’s border police in the northwestern cities of Namin and Germi have “detected and documented” Israeli drones crossing into Iranian airspace from Azerbaijan, according to Hamid Khoshroshahi, an Iranian researcher specializing in South Caucasus affairs. He made the remarks in an interview with the Qatari newspaper Al Jazeera.
Khoshroshahi emphasized that Baku’s close ties with the Jewish state—as well as the permission granted to Israeli companies to operate in industrial zones within the liberated areas of Karabakh, near Iran’s Khoda Afarin County—have become a particular source of concern for Tehran. He also noted that Iran is “monitoring hostile activities by Israeli firms in the ‘Jewish neighborhood’ (known as Krasnaya Sloboda) near Baku, a location often referred to as the ‘Second Israel.’”
The mention of Israeli Harop drone production in Baku, along with reports of airspace violations from the north, “confirms Tehran’s official stance,” Khoshroshahi said, adding that “this obliges Iranian officials to continue monitoring the issue in order to neutralize potential Israeli threats.”
