"Eyes in Iran have also turned to Azerbaijan after Israeli media cited a top general as saying that Israel’s military operated against Iran in a country in the region. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian urged his Azerbaijani counterpart Ilham Aliyev to ‘investigate and verify’ reports that his country’s territory had been used by Israel to launch drones against Iran. In the early days of Israel’s war on Iran, Azerbaijan rejected claims that it was aiding the surprise assault. Unconfirmed claims emerged on June 26 of a blast and a blaze at an Azerbaijani-Israeli military production facility in Baku. However, Azerbaijan’s defense ministry has reportedly denied any such incident," writes the London-based Middle East analysis website Amwaj.media.
"Given Azerbaijan’s close ties with Israel and its use of Israeli drones, Tehran has long expressed concern about its northwestern neighbor’s relations with Tel Aviv. Azerbaijan has deepened its relations with Israel in recent years, highlighted by the opening of an embassy in Tel Aviv in 2023. Baku also continues to export oil to Israel and has refrained from openly criticizing Israel’s war on Gaza. In exchange, Israel has supplied Azerbaijan with advanced military equipment and recently authorized Azerbaijan’s state oil company to explore for natural gas in the eastern Mediterranean," the article notes.
