Turkish pro-government newspaper criticizes Azerbaijan over its ties with Israel

The pro-government Turkish newspaper Yeni Akit has published a series of critical articles targeting Azerbaijan and President Ilham Aliyev over Baku’s deepening relationship with Israel.

In a recent article covering President Aliyev’s reception of the Palestinian ambassador’s credentials, Yeni Akit adopted a sarcastic tone: “Azerbaijan, which continues to strengthen its relations with Israel and never misses an opportunity to voice support for Tel Aviv, also doesn’t hesitate to issue messages in favor of the Palestinian people.” The headline read: “Pro-Israel Aliyev’s remarkable Palestine message: Islamic solidarity…”

Another article focused on allegations circulating on social media, accusing Azerbaijan of establishing an ethnic Azerbaijani spy network in Iran to aid Israeli intelligence. The headline read: “Scandalous Israel allegation against brother nation Azerbaijan: This is too much.”

A third article, titled “Azerbaijan continues selling oil to Israel,” cites the Israeli newspaper Haaretz and notes that, although Israel was omitted from Azerbaijan’s official oil export data in 2023, oil shipments continue via intermediaries.
