Azerbaijan’s location in the Caucasus region—bordering Russia, Armenia, and Georgia, and in close proximity to Turkey via the Nakhchivan corridor—grants it a pivotal role as a bridge between Asia and Europe, as well as a vital route that Israel can rely on to strengthen its regional influence. From a strategic standpoint, the Azerbaijani corridor allows Israel to achieve several key objectives, writes the Qatari newspaper Al Araby Al Jadeed.
▪️ “The corridor provides access to the markets and resources of Central Asia and the Caspian region via Azerbaijan and Georgia, enabling the diversification of trade and energy routes away from traditional pathways controlled by hostile or unstable regimes.”
▪️ “It acts as a logistical and security platform that facilitates alliance-building with regional states to counter Iranian influence. In this context, Azerbaijan serves as a geopolitical partner, allowing Israel to expand its influence and secure supply lines.”
▪️ “Azerbaijan is a key transit route for oil and gas pipelines transporting Caspian energy resources to European and global markets. This makes control over—or cooperation with—the corridor an effective tool for Israel to exert pressure on Iran’s economy, which depends heavily on energy exports,” the newspaper notes.
“By supporting Azerbaijan, Israel can help economically isolate Iran, limiting Tehran’s control over regional energy flows—and, as a result, weakening its capacity to finance military activities,” Al Araby Al Jadeed emphasizes.
