Many of the attacks on Tabriz were carried out using drones and quadcopters that, according to residents of nearby border villages, entered Iranian airspace “from territories liberated by Azerbaijan during the Second Karabakh War,” writes Ahmad Kazemi, an Iranian expert on the Caucasus and Eurasia.
“The main goal of the attacks on radar centers in Ardabil, Germi, Khoruslu, Jolfa, and on border posts (including Bilasuvar) was to create favorable conditions for the infiltration of Israeli drones and quadcopters produced by a joint Baku–Tel Aviv venture. This enterprise, known as ‘AZAD Systems,’ is located on the outskirts of Azerbaijan’s capital. It was launched in 2011, two years after a cooperation agreement was signed between Israel and Azerbaijan, and currently produces three types of combat drones. These drones, allegedly deployed from an Israeli base... into Iranian territory, played a key role in disabling Iranian air defense systems in Tabriz, Ardabil, and Urmia, as well as in preparing strikes that resulted in the deaths of dozens of civilians... The highest number of intercepted vehicles transporting hostile drones, quadcopters, and explosives has been recorded in Tabriz and in the northwest of the country. A crucial role in their movement was played by an ethnic spy network linked to Baku,” the expert notes.
“The intensity of the attacks on Tabriz is directly linked to the activities of a mercenary ethnic spy network established in the Republic of Azerbaijan after it gained independence. This network, which previously operated mainly on the soft front—conducting cognitive and perceptual warfare aimed at infiltrating decision-making centers and diverting public attention from the anti-Iranian actions of the Azerbaijani government (which Uzi Landau, former Israeli Minister of National Infrastructure, referred to as ‘a strategic asset of Israel’)—is now, in addition to its prior activities, engaged in hard warfare. It functions as a fifth column and infantry of the Zionist enemy, with its hands stained by the blood of Iranians, including honorable and respected Azerbaijani compatriots,” Kazemi emphasizes.
The article’s author claims that after the Second Karabakh War, a significant portion of the liberated territories along the 130-kilometer border with Iran was “handed over to Israel under the guise of ‘smart villages.’ Today, the Israelis are using these territories for security and military purposes.”
