“Relations between Iran and Azerbaijan have become strained due to provocations by the Zionist regime, the embassy incident, and measures taken against the Islamic Center in Baku,” said Gholam Hossein Esmaili, Chief of Staff to Iran’s former president (the Iranian news agency Fars, which is affiliated with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps).
On January 27, 2023, an armed man attacked the Azerbaijani embassy in Tehran, killing one staff member and injuring two others. On June 2, 2023, the Iranian Cultural Center in Baku suspended its activities. The head of the center was expelled from the country amid worsening bilateral relations.
