Ex-IDF Officer: Iran May Have Sent Netanyahu a Message in Baku

The recent visit of Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian to Azerbaijan, that took place on April 28, could carry indirect diplomatic significance for Israel, according to retired IDF officer and military historian Grigory Tamar. In an interview with the YouTube channel “ВЗГЛЯД из Израиля” (“View from Israel”), Tamar suggested that the Iranian leader may have left behind a message intended for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who is scheduled to visit Baku on May 7.

"Iranian politicians don’t have many places they can travel to… Naturally, the Iranian president wouldn’t wait long for Bibi (Netanyahu). But in the Middle East, there’s a traditional form of indirect communication — something known as a 'speaking letter.' I don’t rule out the possibility that a certain official was left behind — someone with a good memory, clear diction, and fluent English — to deliver a message to our prime minister (Netanyahu). And our prime minister’s English is perfectly fine too. So, this is a perfectly plausible scenario. Given the current circumstances, I think it’s hard to dispute that Azerbaijan is an ideal platform for this kind of indirect diplomacy," Tamar said.
