Iranian MP Criticizes Azerbaijan’s Shift Towards Israel under Aliyev

"Aliyev, the President of Azerbaijan — even his father (Heydar Aliyev), who became president with the support of the Islamic Republic — has unfortunately, in recent years, taken a different approach toward relations with Iran. This shift has opened the door for Israel to establish a presence in the region," said Mohammad Mahdi Shahriari, a member of the Iranian Parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Commission, amid the Iranian president’s visit to Baku and his meeting with Azerbaijani counterpart Ilham Aliyev.

He added: "Despite the fact that we helped them in many matters — and they (Azerbaijan) owe us greatly for that — at a certain point, they took a wrong path, which unfortunately has affected security and other issues in some areas of our northwest. I believe that Pezeshkian should speak more clearly (at today's meeting with Aliyev) and warn them about the need to prevent the presence of foreign agents along our shared borders."
