Azerbaijan’s Potential Role in Syria’s Energy Sector May Provide Israel with Strategic Reassurance

"Al-Sharaa (Syrian President) tried to convince Ilham Aliyev (Azerbaijani President) to bring SOCAR (Azerbaijan’s state oil company) into Syria, particularly into the oil- and gas-rich regions east of the Euphrates, which are currently under the control of the SDF*. If this effort succeeds, it would provide Israel with guarantees that Syria’s energy sector is in reliable hands. Cooperation between Azerbaijan and Syria serves as a 'reassuring message' to Israel," reports the Lebanese newspaper Al-Akhbar, which is affiliated with Hezbollah, Iran’s most powerful proxy.

*The SDF (Syrian Democratic Forces) is a Kurdish-led military alliance formed in 2015 with the support of the U.S.-led international coalition in Syria. Its backbone is the Kurdish political-military organization YPG, active in northeastern Syria.
