Iranian expert: Azerbaijan’s path to closer ties with the U.S. depends on Israel

“If Azerbaijan seeks to establish deeper and broader relations with the United States, it will have to do so through Israel. This is precisely what keeps Baku within Tel Aviv’s sphere of influence,” said Qasim Momeni, an Iranian expert on the Caucasus, in an interview with the Iranian Labour News Agency (ILNA).

Commenting on the anticipated visit of Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian to Baku, Momeni added: “The visit comes at a time when Israel is actively pursuing its strategic objectives—either in coordination with the U.S. or independently. Netanyahu is currently working to revise previous bilateral commitments between Israel and Azerbaijan, and vice versa. Israeli officials want to be assured that Azerbaijan will uphold its obligations to Israel when necessary, and that Israel, in turn, will fulfill its commitments to Azerbaijan.”
