"How has a country in the Caucasus, with no presence in the Middle East, become a mediator between Israel and Turkey?" This is the question raised in a program aired by Israel’s state-run channel Kan 11.
Azerbaijan maintains “historical and cultural relations” with Turkey and a strategic security partnership with Israel, including significant arms deals. “Israel uses Azerbaijan as a forepost against Iran, including intelligence and offensive activity against the Islamic Republic. Besides, Azerbaijan provides us with oil, and the country has a deep-rooted Jewish community that maintains excellent relations with the Muslim population,” the program’s presenter noted.
“In this situation, it is clear that Azerbaijan is the ultimate mediator between Israel and Turkey… After the experience of the past year and a half, Israel is in no hurry to run to mediators like Qatar or Egypt, whose interests do not always align with those of Jerusalem. A mediator like Azerbaijan, which wants to see normal relations between its two great friends, could be an excellent foundation for hope that, this time, these efforts will bear fruit,” the program concludes.
