Former Azerbaijani Foreign Minister opposes Azerbaijan’s inclusion in the Abraham Accords

Tofig Zulfugarov, former Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan, shared his views on the prospect of Azerbaijan joining the Abraham Accords during a broadcast on CBC TV Azerbaijan:
“The Abraham Accords are agreements between Israel and countries with which it had been in conflict. Our situation is entirely different, and so when there are attempts to place us in the same group as countries that previously had lower levels of relations with Israel — that, in my view, is a controversial issue. Why should strengthening ties with the United States necessarily take place within this framework [of the Abraham Accords]? Perhaps our relationship with Israel has potential and opportunities outside of the Abraham framework — through new types of agreements... Our relations with Israel are already advanced… I believe we have the potential to elevate [Azerbaijan-U.S.] relations to a new level independently,” Zulfugarov stated.
He added: “Let’s not forget that Azerbaijan, as a friend and partner, is of interest to many. That’s why I believe we should pursue the strengthening of our ties — both with the United States and with Israel — based on the strong foundation we already have, rather than lowering ourselves to the level of those who have been in conflict with Israel for nearly 70 years.”
