Israeli strategist: Azerbaijan should join the Abraham Accords to unlock “incredible opportunities”

Israeli political strategist David Eidelman, a former advisor to several Israeli parties, has explained why Azerbaijan should join the Abraham Accords framework. His remarks came in response to Azerbaijani MP Rasim Musabekov, who recently opposed an initiative by Israeli experts—backed by American rabbis and Israel’s Shas party—to involve Azerbaijan in the Abraham Accords. “When you feel the wind of change, don’t build walls—build windmills. In other words, take advantage of it,” Eidelman said. He explained that Trump’s unpredictability creates unique and even “incredible opportunities” that must be seized.
Eidelman rejected the claims made by Azerbaijani and Armenian commentators that Azerbaijan supposedly cannot join the Abraham Accords because they are intended solely for normalizing relations between Israel and Arab countries. According to Eidelman, the Accords are aimed at the broader integration of the Jewish state into the Muslim world, and any Muslim-majority country can be included. Speaking specifically about Azerbaijan, Eidelman noted: “The problem is that for many years, Azerbaijan has been asking us to sell them F-16s. But we can’t sell them F-16s… We can’t even sell Azerbaijan much of the defense equipment we’ve developed, because we made it jointly with the U.S., and the U.S. prohibits its sale specifically to Azerbaijan… This isn’t an agreement with Israel. Rasim is right—Azerbaijan already has excellent relations with Israel. This is an opportunity for an agreement with the United States. The (Abraham Accords) platform offers even more than what the U.S. and Israel can provide together… There are things that cannot be done bilaterally. Some things can only exist on a larger platform.”
