With leading Indian media covering the Israeli think tank BESA’s initiative to establish a trilateral alliance between Israel, Azerbaijan, and the United States, it is worth recalling a proposal made by India’s Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Mani Shankar Aiyar, during his visit to Baku in June 2005.
At the time, Israeli media reported that Aiyar had suggested transforming Israel into a regional transit hub for exporting Caspian oil to Southeast and East Asia. His proposal involved transporting oil via the Mediterranean Sea to Ashkelon, then through a pipeline to Eilat, and from there, shipping it onward via the Red Sea using tankers.
According to Aiyar, this route would enable significantly faster and more cost-effective transportation of oil from the Caspian region to India, China, Japan, and South Korea.
