Iran Strengthens Ties with Armenia to Access EU and Counter Azerbaijan-Israel Axis

“Iran is interested in improving and strengthening its relations with Armenia as an alternative route for connecting Iran to the European Union and for exporting Iranian oil, gas, and other products to Europe via Armenia. This policy is very clear... They are ready to help Armenia maintain its sovereignty and stand against its enemies—Turkey and Azerbaijan.

Currently, Iran views Azerbaijan as a threat to Iran’s territorial integrity. Iran understands that if Israel attempts to strike Iran’s nuclear facilities, it will unhesitatingly use Azerbaijani territory. Iran has stationed troops in its northwestern provinces and keeps a close watch on the actions of both Azerbaijan and Israel. At the same time, it sees Armenia as a natural ally. Accordingly, Iran is working to establish a presence in Armenia —of course while respecting Armenia’s sovereignty and the policies it pursues. Armenia’s growing ties with Europe—particularly with the European Union—benefit Iran and safeguard its future interests in the region.”

These comments were made by Sahak Shahmuradyan, a political analyst and journalist residing in Tehran, in an interview on the 1in TV YouTube channel of the Armenian news outlet 1in.am, which is pro-Western and not an opposition source.
