Alex Greenberg, a reserve officer of Israeli military intelligence and co-author of the policy documents from the BESA think tank that outlined the concept of a trilateral alliance between Israel, Azerbaijan, and the US, provided clarifications on this matter to Kol-Barama radio, which represents the interests of the Shas party, a part of Netanyahu's governing coalition.

Greenberg stated: "This policy paper explains how Israel and the U.S. should deepen their ties with Azerbaijan to integrate it into the Abraham Accords. However, the Abraham Accords should not be viewed solely in the narrow sense of 'peace' (between Israel and Muslim countries). After all, we were never at war with the UAE (which was one of the architects of the Accords and signed them in 2020). Rather, it is a framework for the U.S. and Israel to counter and neutralize Iran (particularly in terms of its destructive influence in the region). That is precisely why the Iranians were so angered by this document (by BESA). Their anger isn’t just about the fact that someone wrote about it—it’s because they genuinely fear its implications."

When asked what Azerbaijan’s integration into the Abraham Accords would actually mean, Greenberg explained: “First and foremost, it means Azerbaijan should gain access to U.S. weaponry. To achieve this, the United States must repeal Section 907, which serves as a sanction against Azerbaijan imposed by the United States under pressure from the Armenian lobby. This restriction limits the scope of the U.S.-Azerbaijan relations. Donald Trump would have no problem overturning it... And that would mark the formal beginning of a deeper partnership. Especially now, as Iran is actively working against both us and Azerbaijan on all fronts."
