Trump's son-in-law and the agreement between Azerbaijan and Israel

People close to Jared Kushner, son-in-law and behind-the-scenes adviser to the U.S. president, were “circling around” the deal in which Azerbaijan’s state oil company SOCAR acquired a 10% stake in Israel’s Tamar gas field. This was reported by the Israeli financial newspaper Globes on February 28. It also notes that Kushner is actively expanding his investment projects in the Middle East and working with partners in Israel, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Qatar.

Trump’s son-in-law was one of the architects of the Abraham Accords, which were signed in 2020 between Israel and the UAE, Morocco, Bahrain, and Sudan under U.S. mediation. According to Globes, Kushner has recently been working to broaden the Abraham Accords in order to normalize relations between Israel and Saudi Arabia, as well as with a dozen other Muslim countries. Trump’s idea for Gaza reconstruction is also credited to Kushner.

On February 25—three days before Globes released its report—the Israeli think tank BESA published a policy paper recommending that the Trump administration establish a trilateral alliance of Azerbaijan, Israel, and the United States. The paper proposes leveraging the long-standing functional experience of the Israel-Azerbaijan partnership in the planned expansion of the Abraham Accords. It also stresses the importance of integrating Azerbaijan into regional investment and technology initiatives involving Israel, the United States, and Arab countries. In addition, the paper puts forward the idea of including Azerbaijan, along with other Muslim countries, in the Gaza reconstruction project by supplying necessary energy resources on a “humanitarian basis.”
